Top Ten States with Highest Unemployment Rates

The following are states with highest unemployment rates as of January 2016 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Mississippi - 6.7%
  • Alaska - 6.6%
  • Washington DC - 6.5%
  • New Mexico - 6.5%
  • Illinois - 6.3%
  • West Virginia - 6.3%
  • Nevada - 6.2%
  • Washington - 5.8%
  • Arizona - 6.2%
  • California - 5.7%
  • Louisiana - 5.9%
  • South Carolina - 5.5%
  • North Carolina - 5.6%

    The economy has turned around from the economic collapse in 2009. A lot of those who were unemployed found new employment; unfortunately a good number had taken a significant cut in pay or part-time hours.

    We still have a long way to go and sometimes I wonder whether we will ever go back to the pre-2009 economy. I always stay hopeful that things will change for the better. I hope you do, too.
